When it comes to weight loss success, most of us focus in on things like the amount of calories we should be eating, what types of exercise are the most effective at burning those calories, and other practical matters. Focusing on these types of things is good and important, but there’s something you must remember: if you don’t get your head in the right place, weight loss will be almost impossible.
To make sure you’ve got your brain thinking in the way it should, a way that is going to facilitate long-term success, try these tips to get your thinking and your mindset in place:
Tip #1: Love Yourself Through the Process
When a person seeks to lose weight, there is no getting around the fact that she wishes to change something about herself. However, it’s important to remember that just because you’re not satisfied with one aspect of how you look doesn’t mean you shouldn’t love and embrace yourself.
Each morning, make an effort to look in the mirror and say something along the lines of, “I love you. You are doing this for a healthier, happier you, not to punish yourself.” This will really help fuel you through those workouts and the tough cravings and will help to keep you in a healthy place. Remember, changing your weight is good, but your weight does not define you!
Tip #2: Surround Yourself with Support
It’s hard to think positive and stay focused on your goals if you don’t have the right support around you. Consider joining a diet center; diet centers are filled with supportive people who are on the same journey as you, as well as those who have the knowledge, expertise, and encouragement you need to realize your goals.
Also, be sure you have a friend you can call when you’re feeling bad, have had a slip-up, are trying to avoid a slip-up, or just need a friendly voice and a word of encouragement. This can work wonders for your mental well-being and your weight loss success.
Tip #3: Reward Progress
In order to make weight loss more fun and to keep you energized and enthusiastic about the process, make sure you reward and celebrate any milestones you reach (but not with junk food!), large or small. Celebrate losing that first pound, the first five, and on and on. Your body will thank you, and this is also a great way to keep yourself feeling motivated and positive.
Tip #4: Treat Yourself Once in a While
Finally, make sure that you don’t make any food completely “off limits.” This is only going to make you crave it more and can really hinder your progress. Instead, allow yourself to have a healthy portion of the foods you crave from time to time. This will make it easier to lose weight, as will all of these useful “mind tricks.”
