How to Snack Properly

Are you someone who loves to snack? If so, there’s some good news in store. Losing weight does not mean that you have to completely give up on your love of snacking. Instead, it just means that it might be a good idea to swap out those potato chips for some healthier, lighter snacks that will be kind to your waistline while still satisfying your appetite.

Snack #1: Air-Popped Popcorn

If you love eating popcorn at the movies but don’t like the exorbitant amount of fat and calories even a small serving contains, switch to air-popped. You can typically pick up an air popper, which uses no oil or butter, for $20 or fewer. A whole cup of air-popped popcorn will net you fewer than 100 calories and will taste absolutely delicious!

 Snack #2: Fresh Fruit

When you’re feeling hungry but aren’t quite hungry enough for a meal, it never hurts to grab a piece of fresh fruit. Fruit provides a little sugar to satisfy your sweet tooth and a nice zing of energy to help you power through your day. Just make sure you’re truly eating fresh fruit, not the canned products that is packed in highly-caloric syrup or fruit juice. Also, do limit your portion size; fruit, while good for you, does still have calories thanks to its natural sugars, so stick to just one serving per snack session.

Snack #3: Veggies and Hummus

Another good option is to pair your favorite sliced or “sticked” veggies, such as cucumbers or carrots, with a tablespoon or two of protein-packed hummus. The hummus will keep you feeling full for a long time and will also give you a nice, nutritious “punch.” Vegetables are very low in calories, so you can eat those to your heart’s content, and, if you finish off your hummus portion, a few tablespoons of low-calorie salsa can do the trick nicely as well.

Snack #4: Yogurt

A great way to satisfy that sweet tooth is with a pot of yogurt. Greek yogurt is best since it contains lots of protein and nutrients, but any yogurt will do as long as it doesn’t have any added sugar. Plus, with so many awesome yogurt flavors to choose from, you really can enjoy a treat that feels decadent….without the ill effects of a truly decadent dessert.

Snack #5: Nuts

A handful or two of nuts is our final healthy snack suggestion. While nuts can be a bit high in calories, that doesn’t really matter if you’re eating only a few. Plus, their power to fill you up and help you stay full makes them well worth their calorie content.

As you can see, you don’t have to give up snacking to be healthy; you just have to make sensible snacking choices.
