Healthy Heart Food

Cancer is one of the most feared and deadly diseases affecting Americans today. Fortunately, there are many things that can be done to reduce the risk of cancer, such as not smoking, not drinking alcohol to excess, and avoiding excess sun exposure. Eating a healthy diet and being a healthy person in general can also reduce the risk of cancer. In fact, there are some “superfoods” that have been proven to, when consumed regularly, ward off cancer and other harmful diseases.

Fruit is an amazing food all around. Whether you’re trying to lose weight or just trying to be healthier in general, this low-calorie, vitamin-packed food group is definitely a must-have in any diet. People who consume one or more fruit servings per day have been shown to have a reduced risk of cancer, especially stomach cancer and lung cancer.

While research is still being done on how and why (and in what dosage) garlic fights cancer, studies do show that it does, especially when it comes to esophageal, colon, and stomach cancer. Most scientists concur that it either keeps cancer-producing organisms in the body from functioning or by stopping the multiplication of cancer cells. Either way, adding more garlic into your diet is definitely beneficial.

Carotenoid-Containing Vegetables

Basically any vegetable provides good nutrition to the body. However, some vegetables have been shown to really go the extra mile when it comes to fighting cancer. This is especially true of vegetables that contain a healthful ingredient known as Carotenoid, which you can find in large quantities in carrots, squash, and Brussels sprouts.

Berries are delicious and low in calories, and, as an added bonus, scientific studies have also shown that they help to ward off cancer. This result is thought to occur due to their large amounts of antioxidants, which stop cell damage from happening. Any type of berries from blueberries to strawberries will do the trick when consumed regularly.

Lycopene-Rich Foods

Like Caretenoids, Lycopene is a great, natural ingredient that can fight cancer. Studies have shown that it is especially good at fighting off prostate cancer, making Lycopene-rich foods a must for men especially. High amounts of this cancer-fighting ingredient can be found in fruits like tomatoes and watermelon, which also happen to be low-calorie and nutritious.

Cruciferous Veggies

Cruciferous vegetables including leafy, thick greens like broccoli and cabbage, and they are excellent at warding off cancer. Scientists have found that, when consumed regularly, these vegetables provide protection from free radicals in the body, which can cause cell damage and cancer. They have also been shown to kill off cancer cells in the body, making them a must-have in any diet. And, like most of the other foods on this list, they are low in calories and healthy in general.

While all of these foods can definitely help in the war against cancer, do keep in mind that a healthy overall diet and lifestyle is the best way to keep cancer at bay.
