There’s a “food product” on the market today that nutrition experts have deemed dangerous, and unfortunately, it’s a product that a lot of dieters consume on a regular basis. It’s called aspartame, and it’s an unnatural sugar substitute that’s found in a lot of so-called “diet” foods and drinks.
The American Cancer Society does not officially maintain that consumption of aspartame is correlated to cancer. However, it does cite an Italian research study which found that when rats were exposed to high doses of aspartame, they had an increased risk of blood-related cancer. While the American Cancer Society is quick to say that aspartame is backed by the Food and Drug Administration, these results should still make people think about what they are putting into their bodies and the harm it could potentially be doing to them both now and in the future.
Aches, Pains, and More
While the Food and Drug Administration may have approved aspartame for use in food products, it does still realize that problems have been reported due to aspartame consumption. The Food and Drug Administration receives food and drug related complaints, and some of the common complaints it has received in relation to aspartame include:
- Muscle spasms
- Weight gain
- Vision problems
With so many potential side effects, it is surprising that the FDA would approve such a substance, and though there may not be “official” risks associated with aspartame yet, these symptoms experienced by others should give people pause.
For pregnant women, the effects of aspartame can reach to their unborn children, according to the results of a Monsanto-funded study. The study found that aspartame consumption may be linked to brain damage in developing fetuses and that it could also lead to small brain changes, such as decreased memory and concentration, in adults and other people who consume aspartame regularly and/or in large quantities.
Worsening of Existing Conditions
To make matters worse, many researchers have also suggested that aspartame consumption can worsen pre-existing conditions or diseases. Some even believe that it may bring on these conditions, especially in those who are already at an increased risk of contracting them. Among these diseases and conditions are:
- Brain tumors
- Multiple sclerosis
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Parkinson’s disease
- Alzheimer’s disease
While there are many lines of thoughts on aspartame, with some people believing it does harm and others believing it is harmless, the risk just isn’t worth taking. Plus, anyone who is striving to be healthier from the inside out should not be ingesting unnatural, man-made substances. Therefore, it is in the best interest of dieters and all people to avoid aspartame and other chemical products. Instead, whole, healthy, natural foods are the way to go; these, when consumed in moderation and in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, have no negative side effects, guaranteed.
